Your mind is a garden

You reap what you sow.

It's easy to feel down or sad when things don't go your way. It's easy to throw in the towel when your efforts are derailed. Sitting on the couch takes much less effort than showing up when things get hard.

But giving up creates a vicious cycle. It stops the planting process and halts the growth in the garden of our minds.

If we stop doing the things that sustain us, stop practicing the habits that are good for us, and put off the activities that bring us meaning, we're going to drift further from ourselves and our goals. Our progress and strides begin to fade into the past. Over time, we might notice our mental and emotional health wavering.

But if we take the time and make the effort, even through small actions, we will slowly but surely build momentum and keep moving forward, even when life tries to push us back. These small efforts to continue caring for ourselves and our well-being are like planting seeds in the spring; we won't know what will take root and grow until we give it time and sustained care.

Life's stressors will inevitably get in the way. We may take a few weeks off, only to return to a shriveled, barren garden. But thankfully, gardens are resilient, and life is dynamic. The gardens of our minds need only a small bit of effort to return from withering to blooming. Slowly, we can trim back weeds, water our soil, and cultivate a colorful life brimming with meaning and connection that can only come from intentional care.

A call to catch up with a loved one, a short walk outside to feel the sun, a healthy meal prepared, a mindful journaling session, or setting down the social media app. Small actions add up.

The small seeds we plant today, in this moment, will miraculously sprout with time. Seasons will change, and our gardens will change with them, but they're always here, ready to be tended to, to give back the same love and care they receive, and to provide a healthy, meaningful, colorful life in return.

What small seed can you plan today that your future self will be grateful you nurtured?
